Coffee · 5+ locations · NYC, Austin
A Financial District café that looks like a slick real-estate amenity in luxury towers and hotel lobbies — but it's never taken outside money. Co-founder Daniel Murphy still runs it day to day, and it just opened its first location outside New York, in Austin.
The Big Picture
Black Fox Coffee has never taken outside investment: co-founder Daniel Murphy still runs it as CEO, while co-founder Gary Hardwick holds a largely advisory Chairman role from California. A federal lawsuit alleging unlawful tip pooling and withheld tips, filed against the company and Murphy personally in January 2023, was voluntarily dismissed three months later, before any settlement or court ruling. The business answers to its own founders, not a board of outside investors.
