Poetica is an Uzbek immigrant's six-café group in Brooklyn and the East Village, still run by the founder who opened it in 2020. It is under federal civil-rights investigation after refunding a congressman's coffee and saying he wasn't welcome back over his support for Israel.
The Big Picture
Parviz Mukhamadkulov owns and runs all six Poetica cafés, and the one time it went outside for money it offered to borrow rather than sell a share of itself. In June 2026 the Justice Department opened a civil-rights investigation into how Poetica treated a congressman it refunded and told not to come back. It is an investigation, not a finding, and no charges have been brought.
