Utopia Bagels

Dining · 4+ locations · NYC: Whitestone, Long Island City, Murray Hill, Midtown East

A Queens bagel institution, hand-rolled and kettle-boiled since 1981, now spans four NYC shops. Co-founder Scott Spellman still runs it with his son Jesse, who self-financed the Manhattan expansion with two new partners — no outside investors.

Founder-run

The Big Picture

Genuinely Independent

Utopia Bagels has stayed a family-and-partner operation for 45 years, growing from one Whitestone storefront to four NYC shops entirely on its own money — no VC, PE, or institutional investor has ever been involved. As a small, single-metro operator, its public labor and environmental record is thin beyond its wages and inspection history. It answers to the four co-owners who actually run it: Scott and Jesse Spellman, and operating partners Angelo and Jimmy Tsoulos.
