Chipotle Mexican Grill
Mexican fast casual chain · 4,056+ locations · US nationwide, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Middle East
A fast casual chain whose Food with Integrity pledge comes with published sourcing targets it actually meets. Its own restaurants are where the record turns: child labor settlements in three jurisdictions since 2020, and $20 million to about 13,000 New York City workers.
The Big Picture
Chipotle publishes full Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and holds a Science Based Targets initiative-validated goal to halve them by 2030, but its Scope 3 total is running 36% above the 2019 baseline that goal is measured against. The record inside its own restaurants is a separate problem: since 2020 it has settled child labor cases in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Washington DC, paid $20 million to about 13,000 New York City workers over scheduling and sick-leave findings, and settled two National Labor Relations Board complaints arising from union organizing. Founder Steve Ells left the board in 2020, and the company answers to public shareholders.
